The entourage effect is the idea that all of the compounds in the cannabis/hemp plant (cannabinoids, terpenes, etc.) work synergistically together to provide beneficial effects.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CANNABINOID AND A TERPENE?
Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant that work with the endocannabinoid system in humans and animals. These compounds bind to the cannabinoid receptors to modulate neurological responses such as pain, seizures, and anxiety. CBD is the most well-known cannabinoid (along with THC) but at least 113 cannabinoids have been isolated from the hemp plant. Scientists are still working to understand how all of these cannabinoids work together.
Terpenes are the compounds created by plants (and some insects) that provide a plant’s characteristic odor. If you’ve ever smelled a lemon that’s been newly sliced, a sprig of rosemary or thyme, or a fresh-cut Christmas tree, you’ve encountered terpenes. The terpene found in largest concentration in the hemp plant is Myrcene. Scientists are still working to understand the role of terpenes, but Myrcene is thought to have relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties.
What other substances can be found in hemp plants?
CBD oil can also contain fatty acids, chlorophyll, vitamins, and flavonoids. Each of these can also contribute to the entourage effect of CBD.
How do I know if I’m getting the entourage effect from my CBD oil?
Look for the terms “full spectrum” or “broad spectrum” when you purchase CBD oil. A broad spectrum product like ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™ allows you to harness the power of the entourage effect. Broad spectrum means that we don’t just isolate one cannabinoid when we extract the CBD. Rather, we retain the full profile of compounds that are found in our specialized Colorado hemp hybrid plants.
Be aware, however, that there is no regulation on CBD labeling, so it’s important to choose a CBD provider that has been proven trustworthy. If the nation’s leading veterinary cannabis research institution trusts us for their clinical research, you can count on us to deliver exactly what we’re promising!« Back to Glossary Index
