CBD and the FDA

The Food and Drug Administration Answers CBD Questions

Cannibidiol (CBD) holds a great deal of promise as an important key to health and wellness for both humans and animals. CBD’s ability to ease suffering from seizures, inflammation, osteoarthritis, anxiety, and more has been well documented anecdotally for many years, and clinical trials are beginning to support that anecdotal evidence. Recently, as more and more people turn toward organic, plant-based therapies, interest in the hemp-based oil has exploded. Bloomberg Businessweek recently noted the exponential growth:

Demand for CBD, a nonintoxicating compound found in hemp and marijuana, has exploded in the U.S. since December, when Congress passed a new farm bill that decriminalized industrial hemp. The CBD market could be worth almost $24 billion in the U.S. alone by 2023, with about 7% of sales coming from the pet market, according to Brightfield Group, an industry researcher.

Growing CBD Market Lacks Regulation

With this type of rapid growth, companies are rushing to enter the market, and CBD retailers are popping up on every corner. Whether it’s online, at the pharmacy, at specialty stores, or even at that gas station, it seems that CBD products are all around us. But with little regulation, consumers are often left wondering who to trust. ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™ has been proven safe and effective in multiple clinical trials, but most products do not have that level of safety testing. Indeed, ABSC is the only veterinary company to put their CBD oil through a Phase One Safety and Toxicity Trial.

The FDA Struggles to Keep up With Cannabis-Derived Products

If you’re interested in trying CBD oil for your pet, you may be understandably overwhelmed and hesitant. Navigating the choices can feel like a bit like you’ve entered the Wild Wild West. Whose claims can you trust? How do you know if a product is labeled accurately? How do you know if a product is safe? Here at ABSC Organics, we recommend a little bit of homework. Peruse our research library and check out our clinical trials. You’ll find that we’re committed to safety, research, and continual learning. You’ll learn that our Safety and Toxicity Trial proved that our CBD oil is pure and well-tolerated in dogs. And you’ll see that our epilepsy trial has delivered positive preliminary results, with 89% of dogs showing a reduction in seizure frequency.

Mislabeled products, misleading claims, and questions about legality and proper usage have the FDA struggling to keep up with the CBD market, but they are working to develop a regulatory framework and meet consumer needs. They send out warning letters to suppliers with mislabeled products, they schedule public hearings, and they attempt to educate consumers. To that end, they recently published an FAQ about FDA Regulation of Cannabis and Cannabis-Derived Products. This document is a great resource for those seeking more information about the FDA’s role in Cannabis regulation. Relevant questions addressed by the FDA include:

  • What are cannabis and marijuana?
  • Why hasn’t FDA approved more products containing cannabis or cannabis-derived compounds for medical uses?
  • Does the FDA object to the clinical investigation of cannabis for medical use?
  • What is FDA’s role when it comes to the investigation of cannabis and cannabis-derived products for medical use?
  • Can hemp be added to animal food?
  • Can approved human drugs containing CBD or synthetic THC be used extralabel in animals?

In total, the 26 questions addressed by the FDA serve to educate consumers about just what the FDA is (and isn’t) doing with respect to the CBD market.
